Why do Wedding Flowers Cost so much?

Wondering why your floral for your wedding cost so much? We want to educate our clients on why flowers add up so quick.

This is a world wide business. They are shipped internationally and handled carefully. Flowers are ordered 2 weeks ahead of your event. They are usually shipped to Miami from overseas. They travel to us water-packed in refrigerated trucks. We will receive product on Tuesday. The flowers are then prepped and processed on Tuesday and design starts Wednesday for Saturday.

Bluegrass Chic - Processing Flowers

Processing flowers for wedding bouquets

These flowers are carefully picked for bridal bouquets, allowed to open for a few days and then our designers start making the bouquets.

A lot of the time, your favorite blooms are only in season for a few months a year (peonies, dahlias, hyacinths, lily of the valley, and eucalyptus). So, when they are in season, they are in high demand which in turn, causes the price to go up. The influx of demand during Mother’s Day and Valentine’s day causes the floral prices to sky rocket. Surprisingly enough, because every florist is ordering an abundance of product, it is extremely difficult to receive any product. Another reason flowers get so expensive is due to product quality. We may get a bundle of anenomes and out of the 10 stems, we can usually use about 3. We value our quality products and want only the best flowers for our couples and clients.

Prepping each flower for design takes time. When the flowers are received at the shop, we have to open each box and inspect flowers. They then are processed (stems cut and dropped in buckets to hydrate.) After that, we recipe each centerpiece and bouquet to have a certain amount of each type of flower that our client has requested. Before design, we have to strip and clean each flower and green. For example, we cut off each of the thorns on the roses and have to take off lower leaves to ensure the bouquet stem is clean and uniform.

We like to think of designing as an art. So, you are paying labor for the flowers. Each stem of flower has to be prepped perfectly and placed precisely. From start to finish, just a bridal bouquet can take up to an hour to complete. This includes everything from stripping flowers to wrapping it and sending it out the door. We specialize in unique designs with quality products and want to make sure that we exceed any expectations our clients have for us.
